On Saturday night, April 21, The Boys and Girls Club of Coffeyville, KS hosted a special fund-raising event called Hometown Heroes with all proceeds to benefit the Boys and Girls Club. This show was put together by OPW Legend and Coffeyville’s favorite son, Bull Schmitt!

Following the National Anthem and a word from Boys and Girls Club Director Griffin Walker, the show kicked off with the debut of The American Muta taking on Domino Rivera with his valet Lucy Mendez. The action in this match was slow to start with the competitors feeling each other out early on but Domino quickly fell victim to the stronger Muta. Unfortunately, Muta’s superior strength wasn’t enough to overcome the numbers game when Domino’s valet, Lucy Mendez, helped Domino avoid Muta’s dreaded mist with a well timed slap to the face that distracted Muta enough for Domino to roll him up for the pin.

Here we go. Sizing each other up.

The next match of the night saw Tyler Cook taking on the enormous Kyle “The Badness” Paul. It was a true David vs. Goliath match with “The Badness” dominating early. Size wasn’t everything in this match though as “The Badness” went down to a heat seeking Super Kick directly to the jaw, courtesy of Tyler Cook.

Following the second bout of the evening, event coordinator Bull Schmitt came out to thank everyone in attendance for coming out to support the Boys and Girls Club of Coffeyville. Unfortunately, his kind words were interrupted by “All That” Matt Murphy and his entourage. After running down the fans in attendance and Coffeyville in general, Matt was confronted by Bull and Boys & Girls Club Director Griffin Walker with the following proposition, if Griffin can last more than ten minutes in the Battle Royal at the end of the night, they got to shave the head of Matt Murphy’s manager. Though initially hesitant to accept the challenge, Murphy’s manager agreed. In retaliation for one-upping them, Murphy introduced his associate, “Mr. Nasty” Robert Lee, who would be Bull’s opponent in the following match.

Brimming with confidence, Mr. Nasty made a show of strutting around the ring before the bell rang. Unfortunately for him, this would be his only opportunity to shine as Bull was quick to pounce on his adversary and pummel him mercilessly from the opening bell. A quick breather outside wasn’t enough to get Mr. Nasty back into the match and it was only a matter of time before a Sky High Schmitt Bomb had this young man counting ceiling tiles and being dismissed from the ring by the powerful OPW Legend.

Following the intermission, OPW Alumni Brandon Groom came to the ring to take on “All That” Matt Murphy. “All That” was accompanied by his manager who bears a striking resemblance to George McFly. Brandon was quick to show off his amateur wrestling prowess but a momentary lapse in concentration would cost him the match when Murphy’s manager jumped up on the apron. Hoping to rid himself of the pest, Brandon dragged him into the ring only to be rolled up by Murphy who had to use the ropes for leverage and the win.

It was time for the Semi-Main Event. This match saw OPW Alumni Big Daddy Moore and “Splash” Jackson in familiar territory, facing off as opponents. To make sure this match didn’t get too out of control, the massive Craw was brought in as the special referee. “Splash” was the first one to the ring with his buddy Russ “Da Bus” and he quickly made enemies of everyone in the crowd by running down Coffeyville, the fans in attendance, and Big Daddy Moore whom he referred to as a Milk Dud. Big Daddy did not take this sitting down and made his way to the ring to remind “Splash” that he was no Milk Dud, he was pure Milk Chocolate. Once the bell rang, the action was fast and furious as the two adversaries matched each other move for move. Unfortunately, “Da Bus” proved to be too much of a nuisance to the special referee who got so enraged with the outside interference that “Splash” and “Da Bus” hightailed it for the locker room. They were met by Bull Schmitt who revealed his own referee shirt and imposed his authority by making the match a tag team match of “Splash” and “Da Bus” vs. Big Daddy Moore and Craw. Despite a brief rally, “Splash” and “Da Bus” were no match for Big Daddy and Craw who capitalized on a bit of miscommunication between their opponents for the win and an embarrassing photo op for “Splash” and “Da Bus”.

For the Main Event of the night, the crowd was treated to a 15 Man Over The Top Rope Battle Royal. All of the night’s earlier competitors and a few new faces were involved, including Boys and Girls Club Director Griffin Walker who had to last more than ten minutes in order to shave the head of “All That” Matt Murphy’s manager. The action in this match was fast paced with many eliminations coming early but the shock of the night came when Griffin Walker eliminated “Splash” Jackson AND Bull Schmitt for the win at the 10:47 mark. With this victory, he had met the terms of the pre-match stipulation and made good on his promise to shave that George McFly lookalike’s head. What a great way to end a great show. The crowd was excited from beginning to end and the matches were fantastic.

(Personal Note: It was an absolute pleasure to attend this show. It was a lot of fun to see some familiar faces from the classic OPW days. Bull and the team went out of their way to make everyone feel welcome and everyone in attendance clearly had a blast. Congratulations to Bull and everyone else involved in this outstanding show. I’m looking forward to many more Hometown Heroes shows and my family and I will definitely be making the drive to as many of them as we can. – Scott)
